Leave a bicycle outside overnight, and a simple question usually goes unanswered: what happens to it once nobody's watching? As the temperature drops and the air around it changes, the enclosure meant to protect the bike has to keep up. Get the fabric wrong, and that same enclosure starts working against you, holding in the moisture it was supposed to keep out.
A sealed, non-breathable enclosure traps warm air against the cold metal underneath. Once that air cools enough, it turns to condensation, landing directly on the cassette, chainrings, and steel fasteners. The enclosure itself creates the conditions for rust. Not over weeks. From the first cold night.
The NX1 works on the opposite principle. Its body panels are made from a Carvico warp-knit technical textile that lets air pass through the structure continuously, enough to stop the trapped, warm air that leads to condensation in the first place. That constant airflow is what keeps the space inside the NX1 from turning into the sealed, damp microclimate that corrodes drivetrains and oxidises alloy parts. Breathability here isn't a trade-off against protection. It is the protection. A bike stored under the NX1 isn't left as an open question overnight. Breathable Does Not Mean Wet.
Breathable and water-repellent don't have to be opposites, but doing both at once takes a specific kind of engineering, one most enclosures skip.
The Carvico body panels on the NX1 are treated with HeiQ Eco Dry, a fluorocarbon-free, PFAS-free, PFOA-free water repellent applied to each individual fibre. Not a coating sprayed on top. Not a film laid over the surface. Every fibre is treated so the surface itself repels water. Rain hits the outside and beads off immediately. Underneath, the breathable structure of the fabric stays open, letting internal moisture escape while keeping external water out. Both are happening at once. Neither gets in the way of the other.
The NX1's zip system works the same way. The six access zips use a polyurethane tape that's DMFa-free and PFAS-free. It's heat-bonded to the fabric, not stitched, so there are no needle holes for water to get through. That's usually where an enclosure lets water in first, and here, it's sealed. The rest of the fabric keeps breathing as designed.
The result: the bike stays dry, and the air inside keeps moving. Both were designed in together, from day one, as one requirement, not two.

Breathability works differently. It lets water vapour pass through a fabric, moving from a more humid area to a less humid one. Inside an enclosure, the real risk isn't liquid moisture. It's warm, humid air trapped against cold metal, which cools until it turns to condensation on the drivetrain and steel components.
