I Disagree With the Way Cyclists Think About Bike Storage

Most cyclists treat storage as a single problem. Find a space. Lean the bike. Done.

It is not one problem. It is two, and they happen in opposite directions. One is what the environment does to the bike. The other is what the bike does to the environment around it. The NX1 and NX2 were each built to address one of those directions precisely. Neither does the other's job. That distinction matters.

Where Your Bike Actually Lives

Urban cyclists in London or any other high-density city do not have a dedicated bike room. The machine occupies a hallway one week, a balcony the next, goes on a vehicle rack at the weekend, or leans against the wall of a hotel room mid-tour. Each of those situations presents a different set of threats, to the bike, to the space, or to both.

Understanding which cover does what is the starting point for protecting either.

The NX1 — What the Outside World Does to Your Bike

Most cyclists think rain is the primary outdoor threat. It is not. Trapped moisture is.

A non-breathable cover sealed over a wet bike creates an internal microclimate where dew-point condensation forms directly against the frame. That is what triggers flash rust on steel fasteners and oxidation on alloy components, not rain, but the humidity that cannot escape once the bike is covered. UV compounds the problem differently: it is not cosmetic. Prolonged exposure degrades elastane, dries out rubber seals, and causes structural brittleness in composite finishes across a single outdoor season.

The NX1 is a full-body enclosure. It covers the entire bike -  frame, handlebar system, saddle - in a single tailored structure built by Carvico: 78% Regenerated Polyester, 22% Elastane with LYCRA® XTRA LIFE™, finished with HeiQ Eco Dry DWR treatment. Rated UPF 50+ for UV shielding. The HeiQ treatment is fluorine-free and PFC-free, using hyper-branched 3D polymers at the fibre level; water beads and sheds immediately while the micro-porous structure stays open for internal air circulation. No greenhouse effect. No condensation microclimate. The bike stays mechanically dry even when the environment is not.

One structural detail worth stating clearly: the NX1 is open at the base. The tyres sit directly on the ground. The cover is designed to drape and breathe from the frame downward, not to seal at the floor. It shields the entire bike body and protects walls from frame contact. It does not address the surface beneath the wheels.

Six waterproof reverse-coil zippers (three per side)  align with the seat post, rear wheel, and hubs. Security locks pass cleanly through the frame without removing the cover.

The NX1 protects the bike from the environment. Use it outdoors, on balconies, in low-airflow garages, and on vehicle racks in transit.

The NX2 — What the Bike Does to the Space Around It

Indoors, the threat reverses completely. And it operates on two levels simultaneously. Your home is not a neutral environment.

The first level is the room itself. A road or gravel machine returns from every ride carrying tyre soot, chain grease, brake dust, and outdoor moisture at wheel level. Left alone, tyre soot migrates permanently into hard flooring within hours. Chain grease transfers to skirting boards and walls at the exact height the drivetrain rests. Tyre marks appear on pale tiles and wooden floors after a single evening. None of it is dramatic. All of it accumulates.

The second level is the drivetrain. Most people assume indoors means safe for the mechanical components. It does not. Domestic spaces carry a constant drift of micro-dust and textile fibres from rugs, sofas, and curtains. These particles are drawn to chain lubricant. Within hours of parking an uncovered bike in a room, that settling debris begins binding to the chain. The result is not dirt, it is an abrasive compound forming directly across the cassette. Every gear shift after that accelerates wear on components that cost multiples of the cover itself.

The NX2 is a wheel and lower-frame surface shield. It covers the tyres, drivetrain, and lower body of the bike; the zones in direct contact with floors and walls when the bike is parked indoors. The saddle and bars remain fully exposed above. This is the design logic: the upper bike is clean, the lower bike is the contamination vector, and the NX2 seals exactly that zone.

Another fabric by CARVICO — 82% Recycled Polyester, 18% Elastane, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified. It acts as a dense physical containment barrier, capturing and sealing mud, tyre soot, outdoor moisture, and chain grease inside the cover. Nothing reaches the floor. Nothing transfers to the wall. The elasticised fit conforms tightly to wheel and frame geometry, keeping everything contained without slack.

The NX2 protects the space from the bike, and the drivetrain from the room. Use it for hallway storage, hotel rooms, home offices, and any indoor surface where the bike comes in daily from outside.

I Believe the Two Covers Are Not Alternatives, They Are a System

The NX1 leaves the floor exposed by design. The NX2 addresses exactly that gap, indoors. Used together, they form a complete protection logic for a bike that moves between environments (outdoors to balcony to hallway to hotel room)  without compromising either the machine or the spaces it occupies.

One manages what the outside does to the bike. The other manages what the bike does to the inside.

Both are engineered in London. Both are manufactured in Italy. Both are built to the standard of the machines they are designed to protect.

Protect the bike. Protect the space.
